Barry rode as a professional all his career. He joined the Midland Bassendean Cycle Club (in Western Australia) at 15 and won the Australian Junior Sprint and Five Mile Titles at the 1954 Australian Professional Track Cycling Championships held in Bundaberg, Queensland, riding for the WA team. He represented WA until 1959 when he moved to Victoria to further his career. He met and married Pam there. His family in WA are very proud of his wonderful achievements.
